The founder on his porch, raising a bottle of Brawndo Draft with his grandson

Our Legacy

Make your pappy proud.

Brent “Pappy” Brawnson Sr. · Founder · 1931 –

In 1958, a man with a copper kettle, a pickup truck and a powerful thirst brewed the first batch of Brawndo in his barn and sold it off the tailgate. He sold it out of that truck for thirty years. He never took a day off. He never took a loan. He never took no for an answer, mostly because he could not hear very well.

  1. 1958Pappy brews the first batch in a copper kettle and sells it off his tailgate. The can that started it all.
  2. 1977Intoxicating Hydration. Pappy brews Brawndo Draft in the bed of his truck: the world’s first electrolyte beverage with 14% alcohol. Legal in Texas only. It got around anyway.
  3. 1979Brent Brawnson Jr. takes over the company. Then the town. Then the state. Pappy keeps the truck, and the Draft recipe.
  4. 1987Brawndo goes public on the New York Stock Exchange. Brent Jr. buys every competitor that answers the phone, and two that do not.
  5. 1994Brawndo becomes America’s #1 beverage. A small company called Kamikaze is founded. Nobody notices.
  6. 2003Brawndo replaces water in eleven states. It’s what plants crave.
  7. 2019Brent Brawnson III is named Chairman. And Chief Visionary.
  8. 2026Brent III offers to buy Kamikaze Pharmaceuticals. It is the first time anyone has told him no.

A letter from our Chairman and Chief Visionary

Brent Brawnson III

People ask me what it’s like to run the company my grandfather started with a copper kettle and a pickup truck. I tell them it’s humbling. Then I tell them about my ideas.

My grandfather built Brawndo with his hands. My father built it with his mind. I was born with both, and I have been told many times, by a great many people who work for me, that I am a genius.

Since taking the helm, I have personally invented Brawndo E, personally approved Brawndo Zero, and personally phased out water. I have also learned that every great leader faces doubters. Mine are in Lubbock, and they are rats.

Pappy always said, “Make your pappy proud.” I think about that every day. I think he would be proud. I have not asked him.
